Welcome To Our Village
Featured Attractions

You will be awed. You will cheer. And you’ll learn. There’s a whole lot to see at the Power Smart Village, where you’ll be greeted by a pair of 18-foot welcome figures carved by aboriginal artist George Hemeon, a BC Hydro employee. And you’ll engage in conservation conversations with the host Outreach team.

Stroll through the BC Hydro Pavilion, a text-and-image tribute to the men and women who designed and built a sustainable and reliable energy future for British Columbians. Test your conservation know-how in our Conservation Lab. View our Paralympics Showcase and watch our athletes, live, on a 65-inch screen in our outdoor Power Smart Theatre.

Welcome Figures
Welcome Figures

Welcome figures are traditionally used to welcome visitors, arriving by kayak or canoe, to First Nations settlements. And the 18-foot tall figures at Power Smart Village will play a similar role.

Carved in the Coast Salish tradition by BC Hydro employee George Hemeon under the direction of master carver Sean Hinton, the figures represent a mother and a father. Hands are extended as a sign of welcome and as a message of friendship - arms that bear no weapons.

"I had climbed poles when I was 14. I had climbed them for 25 cents an hour. When I moved to Dawson Creek, I worked on lines my father had built 10 or 15 years earlier. It almost felt like home." - Marcel La Marre

At the Power Smart Village, BC Hydro honours the visionary men and women who designed and built a sustainable and reliable energy future for generations of British Columbians. From a deal for a hydroelectric plant at Goldstream on Vancouver Island in 1897 to the transport of a massive turbine from Brazil to Revelstoke in 2009, it's an amazing story, told in words and images.
